5 Ways to Increase Your Winter Hunting Success

While hunting in the fall, spring, and summer holds its appeal, winter hunting presents unique advantages. With fewer hunters, easier tracking, and animals generally at lower elevations, winter hunting can be a rewarding pursuit. Nonetheless, it comes with its own set of challenges, including shorter daylight hours and shifting animal patterns.

To thrive in winter hunting endeavors, meticulous preparation, adaptability, and the right gear are essential. Those who excel in these aspects often find the thrill of winter hunts to be the highlight of their year. Here are some tips to bolster your winter hunting success.

1. Gear and Preparation Essentials

Preparation is paramount before embarking on a cold-weather hunting expedition. Extreme cold, snow, wind, and fluctuating temperatures can pose challenges for the unprepared. Given that snow and ice can obscure familiar landscapes, having a reliable navigation system is imperative.

Layering for warmth and mobility is crucial. Begin with either merino wool or quality synthetic base layers. Base layers are essential for multiple reasons, such as wicking away moisture and, as they are commonly called, the “base” of the layering system. Without a solid base, the remaining of the kit can fail. Fleece mid-layers provide additional warmth without sacrificing mobility. Quality down or synthetic insulated jackets, pants and vests are game changers if the temperature is getting low. The weight-to-warmth ratio on high-quality down/synthetic insulation is unbeatable. Your outer layer should be waterproof and windproof to shield against snow and biting winds.

Three areas that can easily get overlooked and make a miserable hunt are your feet, hands, and head. These can be the first things to feel cold and are also areas that will drain your body from what heat the body has created, and your insulation is keeping contained. Boots can be very complex in discussion and depending on what type of hunting you are doing such as spot and stalking (mobile) or static hunting like out, of a tree stand will heavily determine what type of boot you use. Socks are very crucial! Merino wool socks are hard to beat for all scenarios and are offered in different thicknesses to help with differing temperatures. Gloves must also be considered as a layering system with base layer gloves, mid layer, and sometimes outer layer. Can be heavily dependent on temperatures and the moisture presence. Lastly your head! Don't let all that heat escape from your head so a quality beanie can go a long way in keeping you warm.

2. Scouting and Terrain Familiarity

Thorough scouting is essential for a successful winter hunt. Look for fresh signs such as tracks and bedding areas, which are more evident in the snow. Identifying food sources, bedding areas, and travel routes used by animals during the cold season can facilitate strategic positioning and outsmarting other hunters.

For some winter hunters, this can also allow you to be more prepared for winter camping and where you will be setting up camp. This is also directly aligned with safety, which needs to be taken seriously with any winter endeavor.

3. Understanding Winter Animal Behavior

Winter's harsh conditions induce significant shifts in animal behavior. Understanding these changes is crucial for anticipating animal movements and increasing hunting success. For example, deer and elk may shift their focus to south-facing slopes and thermal cover for warmth. Familiarize yourself with these behavioral adaptations to hunt effectively in winter. Understanding that some of these different winter behaviors can vary in other areas and states for the same species, and this can be due to topography.

4. Winter-Specific Hunting Techniques

Winter demands a different approach to hunting compared to other seasons. Mastering skills such as tracking and stalking in the snow is paramount. Reading tracks to determine their maturity and discerning the direction of travel are vital skills for tracking game in snowy terrain. Slowly and diligently tracking animals will result in a successful hunt. Another tactic can be using tools like binoculars and spotting scopes to locate the animals from a far distance and then maps to find routes to get closer to the animals utilizing vehicles or a OHV. Additionally, cold weather can impact rifle performance. Hunters should consider factors such as barrel contraction and ammunition performance in freezing temperatures.
